I loved both "The Kite Runner" and "A Thousand Splendid Suns". They both opened up a part of the world that was closed for me. Are they great literature, to be placed beside Jane Austen or Anthony Trollope? No, but I definitely consider them "living books" because I now understand the political and culture landscape of Afghanistan.Shelly Roszakhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07890141906219214847noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13933987.post-9881002032149482572008-01-13T00:27:00.000+01:002008-01-13T00:27:00.000+01:00I'm with you. I have heard it is the better of the two, but still.Framedhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13703547279309902320noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13933987.post-50550729550874505632008-01-12T17:30:00.000+01:002008-01-12T17:30:00.000+01:00I'm about a third of the way through this book. I asked if it was really good and she said, "no, but it's worth reading." She also said she found it "friendlier" reading than The Kite Runner, but finished by saying that reading both of the books made her weary of Afghanistan... .

I'm already thinking that if one changed the location to China it could be an Amy Tan or a Pearl Buck plot. Or if India, Vikram Seth. The story does seem rather familiar.

I enjoyed your review, and am glad you selected this book this week!Laurahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17775836987596716063noreply@blogger.com
